40 Stories - Survivor of the Month

PADV Survivor

“I moved my family to Georgia for a fresh start. My aunt welcomed my kids, boyfriend (at the time) and I into her home until I could find a place. After three weeks of being in Georgia, my boyfriend and I began arguing every day. One day it went too far and I had to call the police. After the investigation, the police recommended that I give PADV a call.

The work that PADV does meant so much to my boys and I. I've been in and out of abusive relationships and shelters since I was 17. Now I’m 30 and I must say I've never felt so safe because the staff is so genuine and welcoming.

I stayed at the PADV Safe House for 90 days. PADV helped me finally realize that I didn’t have to continue to be a victim of domestic violence. The support groups really challenged my thoughts, forced me to take a leap of faith in finding myself and helped me regain my self-esteem. I never felt like I was in a domestic violence shelter because there were so many women encouraging other women. PADV provided an opposite experience from my past experiences with other shelters.

I want other people to know that PADV not only changed my life, but also changed the life of my boys. My older son still asks me, "Mom can we go back and visit because I miss them.” Everyone who has children knows that if your child says something like that then PADV must be doing something right. I remember telling my advocate “I’ve been in and out of shelters since the age of 17, but coming here really gave me that hope that I never had before.”

If it weren't for PADV I would have ran back to my abuser. Before PADV I had already gone back to my abuser six times, but with the support and care provided by PADV, the healing process started. This experience has inspired me to go back to school and become an advocate for domestic violence victims.

I just want to say THANK YOU to PADV for being such a blessing. I'm tearing up just thinking about how blessed and thankful I am to have met you guys. I've been in my OWN place for almost a year now and my life just continues to prosper!  I Love you!!”
