A Story of Survival

As the largest nonprofit domestic violence organization in Georgia, PADV provides professional, compassionate and empowering support to those who have experienced domestic abuse by an intimate partner in metro Atlanta. PADV offers many services including 2 emergency safe houses, a 24-hour crisis hotline, legal advocacy, outreach and prevention programs, supportive housing programs and support groups. Its mission is to support survivors struggling with abuse and to prevent future violence among intimate partners.

Through PADV’s services, thousands have been able to leave their abusers and rebuild their lives. Below is the story of Stacey, one of the many survivors PADV has aided in transforming their lives.

Stacey’s Story

Stacey and her 10-year-old son entered PADV’s program in early 2016. They moved to Georgia from North Carolina when Stacey’s fiancé received an employment opportunity in Atlanta. Soon after the move the fiance’ escalated from verbal and emotional harassment to physical abuse. Stacey could not bear the thought of her son mirroring her boyfriend’s violent and destructive behavior, so she called our hotline, desperate for help and a way out. Once safely in our shelter, Stacey utilized PADV’s job training program to gain employment and begin the long road to financial independence.  Stacey’s son attended the Boys and Girls Club summer camp, participated in a monthly male mentoring program, and received homework help twice a week. As Stacey approached the end of her shelter stay she was accepted into Action Ministries’ rapid re-housing program, transitioning into her own home.
