Make a Donation to Make a Difference

We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give. – Winston Churchill

Oftentimes, when a woman comes to our shelter she arrives with nothing except for the clothes on her back. During our intake process, something that our advocates frequently hear is, “I need to go home to get clothes or diapers for my baby.” Statistics have shown us that the most dangerous time for an abused woman is when she leaves or tries to end the relationship. Returning home to grab a pack of diapers or a few outfits could result in death for her or her children. For this reason donations for our shelters are more important than you may realize.

While some feel that donating items to charity is just a small gesture, it’s actually a great act of kindness that can literally save lives. For many abused women, their only option to maintain safety is to completely start over.  Returning home for things left behind isn’t worth the risk and something we advocate against. Donations like clothing, toiletries, and baby items play a large role in providing support and safety to survivors. It’s so rewarding to be able to provide women with the tools and resources to be self-sufficient, and the confidence and dignity they need to rebuild their lives. A new suit for a job interview can be empowering for someone just entering the workforce, a new pair of shoes could be just what a child needs to calm the anxiety of going to a new school. Having these items donated to our shelter means our survivors won’t have to carry the financial stress of purchasing new things and instead can use their funds for a new home or a car so they can get to that new job.

The next time you are cleaning out your closet or out for a quick grocery run, consider how donating at least one item might make the world of difference for our survivors. Below are six of the most commonly needed items in our shelter:

Clothing – Plus size and children’s

PADV provides shelter to over 550 women and children a year. New or slightly used clothing are always a need so that our clients have what is needed during each season, for interviews, school, and casual every day wear. We especially need plus size clothing, closed-toe shoes, and kids clothing. For any clothing donations, please make sure they are for the current season.

Diapers and Wipes

Diapers are very expensive.  Worrying about having enough diapers and wipes to care for a baby can be very stressful for mothers. Please consider donating a pack of diapers and wipes for our babies! We don’t always get many of the bigger sizes (between 4-6), so donations of this size would be extra helpful.

Toiletries – Full size

PADV is one of a few shelter programs that has an extended length of stay – 90 days to be exact. Full size toiletries such as lotion, body wash, toothpaste and deodorant are needed much more than the travel sized items. Baby toiletry items are also very helpful for the mothers in our shelter.

Laundry Detergent

Both of our shelters have a laundry room so that clients can do their own laundry at their discretion. There is no cost to our clients to use the laundry facilities or laundry detergent. With over 90 residents each day between our two locations, we require a lot of detergent! Having this item donated, and a lot of it, can help our organization cut costs which allows us to focus our financial resources towards other needs for our clients.

Socks & Underpants

While clothing is donated frequently, socks and underwear are items that people typically do not think of when donating. Brand new socks and underwear in all sizes (for women and children) are extremely important and can make a huge difference in the lives of our clients.

Cleaning Supplies

Having two shelters and over 90 clients requires constant cleaning which consequently requires a ton of cleaning supplies. Tissue, paper towels, disinfectant wipes, bathroom cleaner, bleach, dish detergent, mops, brooms and all of the typical items needed to clean a home are always needed for our shelters.

Bonus – Your Time!

Volunteers are always needed to help us sort donations, organize our boutique, food pantry, storage closets and of course to help us clean! Please consider joining our team of volunteers to work in one of our shelters.
